Matias-Rocha y Nueva Trova

"If a Latin American folk musician fell for a stylish jazz player one night and they had children, their offspring could well be Matias-Rocha y Nueva Trova."

A friend asked me about the source of inspiration for the particular effect displayed on this collection of images of the 'Matias-Rocha y Nueva Trova' group performance at the Cafe Luna in Milwaukee. Destiny is the short answer ... Keep reading for the long one ... The lighting at the club was rather poor (photographically speaking) ... The musicians were playing in a dark area of the club which is indirectly illuminated via a translucent partition standing right behind them ... Under these back-lighting circumstances, and in the absence of a flash gun (which I don't like to use), photographing straight on is quite challenging since any attempt to properly expose the musicians results in badly overexposed backgrounds and awful looking images (digital photography is very unforgiving to over-exposure) ... Rather than giving up, I decided to turn the "problem" into an "asset" by incorporating the "bad light" as the unifying theme for the series .... Luckily (in reality it was the unrelentless will of destiny) the club has glass walls that look into a beautiful river walk scenery with a cityscape of lights in the background ... By photographing the reflections of the performing musicians against these glass walls, I eliminated the detrimental effects of the backlighting while superimposing the river walk and skyline images into my exposures ... I probably appeared to be a mad man to everyone in the club, since everytime the musicians started to play,I would "rudely" turned my back towards them and start shooting the imagery just outside the club !!!
